The Project
Tideway East is a £3.8 billion project to upgrade London’s sewer system to meet the demands of the growing population.
London currently relies on a 150-year-old sewer system built for a population less than half its current size. The Thames Tideway Tunnel is a major new sewer, urgently needed to protect the river Thames from pollution and to modernise London’s Victorian sewerage network for the 21st century. This infrastructure project, named London’s ‘super sewer’, is the biggest ever undertaken by the UK water industry and due for completion in 2023.
Client, Costain, and its joint venture (JV) partners, were awarded the contract for the East works package of the Thames Tideway Tunnel. This is one of three delivery partnerships that make up the Tideway project.
Costain approached Millcroft’s scaffolding division to assist with the removal of the tunnel boring machines used to excavate the Eastern section, which consists of a tunnel, from Chambers Wharf in Bermondsey, to Abbey Mills Pumping Station in Stratford.
The Solution from Millcroft
Our in-house design team developed a tailored solution to meet exacting safety standards and provide adequate scaffolding provision for the 32km main tunnel and access shafts.
We installed access scaffolding incorporating stair access towers and containment sheeting to assist with the final removal of the tunnel boring machines, once they had successfully excavated the route for the entire tunnel.
Situated at each end of the new, main sewer, Millcroft’s team designed and delivered access and safety scaffolding to enable operatives to cut down the boring machines in stages, and safely remove from site.
Our teams have undertaken specialist tunnel access and confined space training, and are experienced in this type of work, thanks to our continued involvement in the HS2 programme. Our expert team was able to deliver a flexible and responsive service for the client, whilst keeping operatives safe.
