Introducing Bruce Spencer, who has recently completed his probation period with Millcroft and is now an integral part of our Construction Division. With a solid educational background and experience, Bruce brings a fresh perspective and dynamic energy to our team.
Bruce hails from Carlisle, where he developed a passion for construction and building from an early age. This enthusiasm led him to study Quantity Surveying with Commercial Management at Oxford Brookes University.
“As a child, I always dreamed of playing sports professionally,” says Bruce. “However, I was equally fascinated by the idea of building things, which eventually led me to the construction industry.”
Although Bruce decided on a career in construction, he has not abandoned his love of sport. Outside work, he is an avid rugby player who plays for Roslyn Park Nomads. He also took up golf after the COVID-19 pandemic and has impressively achieved a 9 handicap.
Starting his construction career and a defining moment
Before joining Millcroft, Bruce gained valuable experience as an assistant site manager for housebuilder Trinity Homes in Eastbourne. He spent a year and a half with the company and was part of a team that completed a project of 19 flats for the local council.
During this time, Bruce became friendly with the bricklayer foreman on one of the sites, who shared his extensive knowledge about the bricklaying processes and different bond types with him. “This ignited my love of older heritage buildings, especially from the Georgian era, and I started to appreciate the craftsmanship of each building element.”
This understanding of construction and architecture has helped shape how Bruce approaches his work today.
Joining the Millcroft family
Bruce’s journey with Millcroft started in January this year. “I wanted to move to London, and the job at Millcroft interested me.” His probation period involved learning how Millcroft prices jobs and developing his confidence to handle these responsibilities independently.
As a junior estimator and quantity surveyor at Millcroft, Bruce’s role is diverse and dynamic. “Typically, I price up and send out quotations for regular jobs for our longstanding clients, Tate & Lyle and Procter & Gamble, mixed with larger tender processes for bigger projects outside those contracts,” explains Bruce.
Bruce appreciates the variety his role offers, allowing him to be involved with multiple aspects of the tender process and the construction phase of projects. He has already worked on various contracts including refurbishment and fit-out in industrial environments. Some notable tasks include pricing refurbishment work on a historic hotel in central London and costing a steelwork gantry on a live site, considering various obstacles to ensure safe completion.
Opportunities for growth and development
At Millcroft, our robust training and development programme supports Bruce’s professional journey. He has already completed the SSSTS (Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme) course, which has given him a greater understanding of health and safety law, site safety, risk assessments, method statements and managing sites effectively.
We will assist him with any further qualifications he wishes to pursue and help him gain membership in a professional institute.
A promising future ahead
Summing up his experience so far at Millcroft, Bruce says, “It’s very enjoyable. The atmosphere in the Construction Division office is fun but hard-working. I’m learning a lot from my colleagues in the team.”
Bruce’s journey with Millcroft is just beginning, and we can't wait to see how he grows and contributes to our projects.
